The city is set in a beautiful gulf on the Mediterranean coast. The Taurus mountain range of southern Anatolia runs parallel to the Mediterranean, creating a narrow coastal plain surrounded by mountains on three sides and the Mediterranean to the south. The economy depends on tourism, agriculture, and commerce, with some light industry. The city has many shopping centres with world-famous brands.
The city pulses after dark with what is undeniably the Turkish south coast's liveliest and craziest nightlife, centred on a wide variety of clubs and bars. Most bars double as discos, and most of the hotels offer floor shows, usually with belly-dancing, but there are also many quieter open-air waterfront bars.
Along the coast, the Taurus mountains plunge into the sea, forming small natural bays and peninsulas. The region is protected from the northerly winds, so the climate is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and moderate, warm and rainy winters. There are about 300 sunny days each year, the sea temperature rarely falls below 15°C and rises in the summer to 29°C. The temperature climbs up to 45°C in July and August, but the sea breezes and the north-easterly winds from inland help make the temperature feel cooler.
